Essential Orlando Travel Tips: What to Know Before you Go

Getting Around Orlando

Orlando is a pretty large city. Many of the attractions are fairly spread out, making walking around to different destinations next to impossible. Public transportation is also either difficult to use or can be very expensive.

Because of this layout, the best recommendation is to invest in a rental car! They can be fairly reasonable and will give you the freedom and flexibility to explore Orlando on your own schedule. However, you will need to account for parking fees in many areas. (Also, having your own car makes it so much easier to explore the state on an epic Florida Road Trip!)

Another great option, though slightly more expensive depending on your itinerary, is to use taxis/rideshares to get around town. Some of the hotels near Disney will even have transportation to and from the major theme parks. Talk with your hotel to see if this can be arranged!

Where to Eat in Orlando

Where to eat in Orlando Orlando serves up mostly traditional American food, but with a Caribbean flair! While visiting, you will not want to miss out on the drool-worthy seafood dishes or the unique fusions that make this food scene so delectable! Here are some places to add to your Orlando food bucket list:

Where to Stay in Orlando

Where to stay Orlando Florida Choosing where to stay largely depends on what you are wanting to do while you are in Orlando. If venturing to the theme parks is your main goal, you will want to stay near Disney and Universal. If you are wanting to be close to the major attractions and nightlife, Downtown Orlando is the neighborhood for you. For those that are wanting something a bit calmer and farther from the action, check out the city of Winter Park just northeast of the city. Read our full guide to the best Florida neighborhoods for your vacation here.

We included a hotel recommendation for each of the major neighborhoods in and around Orlando here.

15 BEST Things to do in Orlando for Adults

Walt Disney World

Things to do in Orlando for adults - visit Disney.
Walt Disney World on Lake Buena Vista is hailed as being the “happiest place on Earth”. This is very obvious from the moment you step through the gates into the Magic Kingdom. Many people spend days, even weeks, exploring the 4 different parks that make up the entire theme park (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Centre, Disneys Hollywood Studios & Disneys Animal Kingdom + 3 different water parks!)

Whether you have a week or a day, Disney isn’t just for kids and adults can have just as much fun (if not more!) exploring the magic that awaits at Disney World! And if you are planning to spend more than a day here, Park Hopper tickets which allow multiple parks over multiple days offer the best value!

*Insider Tip for adult things to do in Orlando* One of the best bar crawls in the world just happens to be the world showcase in Disneys EPCOT. With 11 different pavilions representing different countries located on the 1.2 miles around the lake, it is the easiest place to ‘drink around the world’ – without having to leave the State!

EDITORS NOTE: There are obviously 2 very well known parks missing from this theme park heavy section of our guide to what to do in Orlando for adults: those being SeaWorld and Discovery Cove. We don’t believe that killer whales – or any other wild animals – should be in tanks, nor should they be used for human entertainment, and so cannot recommend them; and hope that you will reconsider supporting them too.
If you’d like to see animals in their natural habitat, we’ve got some great ideas in our guide to Ethical Wildlife Holidays.
